THE CLAYTON MARCUS STORY

The Clayton Marcus Company was founded in 1960 by a gentleman named Clayton Marcus Teague. The first sofas were built in the basement of his home, but he quickly had to relocate to a 5000 sq. ft. cinder block building to keep up with customer demand.

Clayton Marcus has evolved into a well established, leading manufacturer of medium to upper-medium upholstered furniture. Our product collections cover a variety of style categories ranging from classic traditional to casual cottage and transitional. Additionally, we offer a broad selection of occasional chairs that provides a natural complement to our fully upholstered products.

We could talk for hours about just how good a Clayton Marcus sofa is and how long it will last. Instead, we've created this photographic tour of our manufacturing process to help you understand why Clayton Marcus is better:

True eight-way hand tied spring base construction

From the very start Mr. Teague had quality in mind when he chose to use the time tested, premium, 8-way  hand tied seating construction. When we introduce a new style we take special care to insure that we select the correct springs to each frame. Each of our tempered steel, double cone springs is positioned at the junction of steel cross bands to provide solid support and a lifetime of durability. Once situated, all of the springs are hand tied to guarantee proper positioning and to lock in the “ride” associated with 8-way hand tied upholstery.

Engineered hardwood interlocking frame construction

From the onset of new product design our frame designers incorporate computer aided design software to bring a concept sketch to life. Before we cut the first piece of wood we have studied the joinery and incorporated strong, solid construction techniques into our interlocking frame assembly process. From that point Clayton Marcus uses the latest computer controlled manufacturing technology to implement the accurate production of our frame parts. During the assembly proces s we further reinforce our mixed hardwoods and hardwood laminate frames as necessary with staples, screws, glue and corner blocks to warrant that they are strong enough to meet your expectations.

Our Comfort Story

At Clayton Marcus w e believe that seating comfort is the engine that drives a sofa’s overall comfort. Each of our frames is individually engineered with high performance 1.8 pound HR foam cushions that marry to our premium 8-way hand tied seating. But even that is not enough: we fill our semi-attached and loose pillow back s w ith 100% polyester fiber, and our tight back s w ith solid polyurethane foam. Each fiber back is channel sewn into several compartments to assure that the fiber doesn’t migrate and alter the shape of the back pillow. We make sure we have the perfect marriage between the cushions and backs before we move forward. While some loss of resilience and loft is characteristic of all foam cushioning and fiber filling, the result is a comfortable, durable seat you can count on day after day. By the way, we use only environmentally friendly, CFC-free foam in our cushions.

Finishing Operations

Many of our frames feature exposed wood parts. Before any of them can move to the final upholstery process they have to pass through our finishing room. After proper sanding and surface preparation, most of our frames can be finished with one of our many optional finishes. Because of our successful occasional table program, certain finishes are designed to match the table collections. If you purchase tables from Clayton Marcus you don’t have to worry about having a mismatched den or living room.

Cutting and Sewing

When you decided to order a piece of Clayton Marcus upholstered furniture you chose from our many and varied fabric selections. Because our fabric line is so diverse, we spend extra time in the pattern making process to make sure that our matching and line up standard s work every time. While we value the experience and mastery of our hand cutters, we also incorporate the latest in computerized cutting to help balance the workload. Each pattern and frame combination is digitized into our CAD software to maximize yield, speed and quality on the automatic cutter. Whether hand cut or cut by our CNC equipment the standards are the same. From the cutting table your cut cover makes the trek to our sewing room. There expert seamstresses put the puzzle together to create the parts that will soon be upholstered to your sofa. Special attention is paid to line-up points during sewing so the upholsterer can match the patterns to our standards.

Superb Tailoring  and Expert Craftsmanship

Clayton Marcus has been building premium quality upholstery for over 40 years. During that period our experienced upholsterers have come to know and understand quality. We combine their expert tailoring skill s with carefully crafted patterns and quality materials to make sure the sofa in your home meets your expectations for quality.

Final Inspection

Final inspectors are charged with taking a particularly close look at the finished product. At this point they clean, straighten, steam and do whatever it takes to make sure the furniture you ordered is up to our standards. Our commitment to strict quality and comfort standards has earned us many repeat customers and a trusted reputation with our dealers. Only after those standards are met does your sofa get the Clayton Marcus deck label and head on to our shipping department.

Over seven hundred fabrics are available on all Clayton Marcus frame styles

Our merchandising department scours the fabric market twice a year so that we can offer our customers the latest in exciting fabric designs. With over 700 fabrics from which to choose we believe you’ll find the perfect fabric for your needs. At Clayton Marcus there are no fabric restrictions. Any fabric can be applied to any style in our line. We don’t limit the designer in you!

Customer’s Own Material (C.O.M.) available on all Clayton Marcus styles

Don’t worry if your fabric preference is missing from the Clayton Marcus fabric collection. You can send us your own fabric, and we’ll apply it to any frame in our line.

Options and Flexibility

Not everyone wants the same sofa as their neighbor. Clayton Marcus offers options that allow you to design a sofa to fit your tastes and home decor. You can choose from options that include contrast pillows, trims, braids and wood finishes. We’re dedicated to getting you the sofa you want the way you want it.

Customer Service

When your order was received it was assigned a unique piecework number by our state of the art order entry system. That number becomes the frame’s “social security number” and brings it to life. From that point forward you can call your customer service representative to find out up-to-the-minute tracking information about your order. We can tell you if your frame is just getting started, on the truck, or somewhere in between. If you have a question we can answer it.

Warranties

Purchasing a new sofa or chair is a big decision, and we want you to be happy with your selection. To help you feel confident about your purchase, Clayton Marcus offers the original purchaser a limited lifetime warranty on frame construction and springs, and seven years prorated on cushions.
